The Changeling - zine
The changeling is one of the saddest figures of Scandinavian folklore. Ostensibly a child of the Hidden Folk that had been swapped for a healthy human infant, but truly a scapegoat for a wide range of quite tangible morbidities.
This zine provides a glimpse into the rich lore surrounding changelings in Norway. The perceptions about them, and how they manifested some of the many fears tied to childbirth in traditional society. The centerpiece: a vivid legend about one such entity that is supposed to have lived across the span of several generations as a sort of supernatural, yet entirely tangible farmhand on a farm in Middle-Norway, as recalled in oral tradition. Richly illustrated with repurposed details from woodcuts by Nikolai Astrup. Featuring an expositional appendix providing rare glimpses into this strange and compelling complex of human-subterranean interaction.
